Chapter 33 - Post 9/11 GI Bill

For individuals who served 90 aggregate days of active duty service on or after 09/11/01 and have an honorable discharge. Starting on August 1, 2009 active duty service members may be eligible to transfer their Post 9/11 GI Bill entitlement to dependents and/or spouses. Under the Post 9/11 GI Bill students may be eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program.

Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill ranges from 40% - 100% based on active duty service time. To qualify the veteran must have at least 90 days of active duty service (not including training for minimum benefit to qualify). To qualify at 100% for the benefit, the veteran must have completed 36 months of active duty service time.

Benefit Includes:

  • - Monthly housing allowance: $1731.00 per month in the Fort Worth area for full time students.
  • - Books stipend: $1,000 per year for books at the rate of $41.67 per credit hour.
  • - Tuition and fees payment: https://financialaid.tcu.edu/veterans/ (tuition is paid directly to the school).
  • - Full tuition with Yellow Ribbon if benefit level is at 100%.
  • Books and Supplies Stipends:

    The books and supplies stipend is paid directly to you. It pays out $41.67 per credit hour up to $1000 per academic year. NOTE: These amounts are based on 100% eligibility. If your eligibility percentage is below 100, the payments will be prorated at your percentage.

    Monthly Housing Allowance:

    For each month that you are attending classes, you will receive your monthly housing allowance the first day of the following month. For example, for the month of September you will receive that payment on October 1st. Please be aware that partial months of attendance are pro-rated. For example, August and December are pro-rated for the fall semester. You will receive this payment as long as you are not active duty or an active duty spouse. It is based on Fort Worth's zip code (76109) even if you are in another city completing a program offered by Texas Christian University.     NOTE: These amounts are based on 100% eligibility. If your eligibility percentage is below 100, the payments will calculate at your percentage.

    Tuition and Fee Payment:

    TCU can only certify to the VA tuition and mandatory fees for courses that fall in your degree plan. Mandatory fees include the General Student Fee, Administrative Fee, Matriculation Fee, Laboratory/Course Fee(s), Microsoft Test Fees. Any tuition and/or fee specific award(s) must be deducted from the amount certified to the VA.

    Full tuition with Yellow Ribbon Program

    For those who meet eligibility requirements, tuition and mandatory fees not covered by the Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill may be covered through the Yellow Ribbon Program.

    Using Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits at TCU

    -If you are a veteran and have previously used Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits please complete Form 22-1995 (Request for Change of Program or Place of Training) online at https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/apply.asp to receive a (COE) Certificate of Eligibility.

    -If you are a dependent or a spouse and applying to use Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits for the first time please apply online at https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/apply.asp and complete Form 22-1990e (Application for Family Member to Use Transferred Benefits) to receive a (COE) Certificate of Eligibility.

    -If you are a dependent or a spouse and have previously used Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits please complete Form 22-5495 (Dependents’ request for Change of Program or Place of Training) online at https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/apply.asp to receive a (COE) Certificate of Eligibility.
